Licensing Server 2016

Windows Server 2016 will consist of two editions as Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2. Standard Edition: Concerns them little or no virtualized environments. Datacenter editions: Used for private and hybrid cloud environments.

Presentation of editions
The standard version is typically used for environments little or not virtualized. It allows two virtual machines or two containers Hyper-V virtualization. Windows Server containers are illimited. Conversely, the Datacenter edition can be used for the environments of private cloud and hybrid. It allows an unlimited number of virtual machines and/or containers hyper-v. Regarding the Windows Server containers, they are as for the unlimited standard edition.

Licensing Windows Server 2016 mode
Unlike previous versions of Windows Server 2016, taking into account the number of processor for the server, the licensing mode is now based on the number of the CPU core. For both editions, the licensing mode will be therefore number of heart + CAL. It is therefore interesting to separate the physical and virtual servers.

On physical servers, the physical hearts all must be covered in the licence. A minimum of 8 licences by heart is required for each processor.

Thus, licensed 16 hearts Windows Server 2016 is at the same price as licensed two CPUs under Windows Server 2012 R2. Concerning the standard version, we saw above that two machines virtual or tale-coaching was included.To increase this number, it is possible to assign multiple licenses to a heart. With this new licensing mode it is necessary to meet the requirements below:

• A minimum of 8 licences heart are necessary for each physical processor.

• A minimum of 16 licences heart are required for each phy-music server.

We have seen the price of licensed 16 hearts Windows Server 2016 will be identical to a licensing two processors Windows Server 2012 R2. However, this rule is not valid for the old servers with only one heart because it will nevertheless be necessary to purchase 16 licenses heart. Thus the license will cover a heart that does not exist. On the client, all CAL user or device that accesses a Windows Server (standard or Datacenter) system must necessarily pos-seder a client cal.
